Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian civilians and military persons, as well as transit prisoners, including small children from Latgale, Belarus and Russia, were imprisoned in the camp. During the existence of the Salaspils camp, more than 20,000 people were held here at different times, but at least 2,000 people died from hard work, illness, hunger, inhuman treatment and punishment, but together with the Jews who died during the construction of the camp - more than 3,000 people. In 1967, one of the largest monuments in Europe was unveiled on the site of the camp. The emotionally impressive memorial ensemble is an object of brutalism of international scale and significance. The Salaspils Memorial Ensemble is included in the canon of Latvian culture. The memorial consists of a 100 m long concrete wall symbolizing the border of life and death and seven giant sculptures: “Mother”, “Unbroken”, “Humiliated”, “Oath”, “Rot Front”, “Protest”, “Rot Front” and “Solidarity”. Skarainis, J. Zarins (J. Zariņš); architects G. Asaris, O. Ostenbergs, I. Strautmanis, O. Zakamennijs.
